Spoken word, music & dialogue. A free monthly themed spoken word poetry/debates night.
Each event includes featured poets and an open mic, followed by a round table audience discussion in the Chapel in St Margaret's House.
Open Mic sign up from 6:30pm | Starts at 7pm.
Our theme this month is Femininity.
We want to dwell a while in the divine feminine, how it feels, what it means for us, and our relationship to it.
Femininity is not necessarily about gender, but a quality and an expression we can identify with to varying degrees.
Come and tell us about/show us your unique femininity. What blocks or stifles your femininity, and what allows it to flourish? What value do you place on it? What would it say if it spoke?
This month we are joined by Sandra Howell. Sandra began writing poetry during lockdown in 2020. Her first poem, ‘Angry Black Woman’ became part of her trilogy of poems, ‘We Matter: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow,’ in June 2020. Sandra collaborated with Collage Arts’ artists, for Collage Arts to produce the first two poems from her ‘We Matter,’ trilogy, ‘The Revolution is Being Televised’ and ‘Angry Black Woman,’ as YouTube videos, voiced by actors Sheila Atim here and Martina Laird here . Her poetry has been published online by ‘Wildfire Words’, ‘Hidden Literature,’ and Collage Arts’ (now Writing Room). In 2022 her poetry was shortlisted by the Lascaux Prize in Poetry. Since January 2023 Sandra has been performing at poetry open mic events across London, including debuting as a featured poet, for Fed Up poet’s fundraiser for Southwark Foodbank, on 26 June 2023. Her poetry is on display in City Lit’s ‘The Language of Colour’ exhibition from 31July to 22 September 2023.
