Get ready for the most unique boxing event in East London…
Aldgate boxing legend Daniel Mendoza, all the way from the 1700s, inspires a new style of boxing for young people of the 21st century.
St Hilda's East Community Centre's Brave Girl group consists of young people aged 10-15. Throughout this project, they've taken part in workshops led by expert facilitators on dancing, poetry writing, story-telling and boxing, collaboratively exploring the question: How am I the hero of my own story?
Who will triumph in Mendoza Mania?
Made in collaboration with Voicebox, St Hilda's East Community Centre and St Margaret's House, 'Mendoza Mania' investigates the heritage of boxer Daniel Mendoza (1764-1836) who lived for a time across the road from St Margaret’s House where he’s credited as writing the first ever sports biography. It’s a local story that highlights issues relevant today: anti-Semitic hate, masculinity, and sporting heroes.
