Summer Open Exhibition - Aquatic Art - Explorations of Flow

Curated by Virginia Orr and Sayma Sultana

For our second Summer Open Call Exhibition we’re showing work around the theme of Aquatic Art – Explorations of Flow. Artists have always been captivated by water, its continuous and contrasting elements of flow, movement, serenity and calm.

Water is inherently fluid , ever changing and the works on show here express it in all its moods, crystal clear, deep and dark, still, turbulent, a place for solace, play, fun and danger. All the facets of water are beautifully interpreted and expressed in many different mediums: print, paper, crochet, oil painting, acrylic painting, pastel , pen, mixed media. photography, sculpture, art books and mosaic work.

‘Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can't go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does.’ Margaret Atwood

The movement of water in art symbolises life’s constant change, encouraging viewers to embrace fluidity and adaptability.

Engaging in creative activities offers numerous therapeutic benefits. Creativity enhances mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It provides an emotional outlet, allowing individuals to express feelings and thoughts non-verbally. Creative processes foster a sense of accomplishment and boost self-esteem. They also improve cognitive function, encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking. Participating in creative endeavours promotes mindfulness and relaxation, contributing to overall well-being and resilience against life's challenges.
