Supporting Artists

One of our key aims is to give support to emerging artists to refine their work and take creative risks.

How we support artists and practitioners:

Our Artist in Residence programme:

Supporting local, emerging artists to develop their practice, our artist in residence (AIR) scheme was launched in the spring of 2019. We provide free space in our small AIR studio. Each artist is with us for 3-6 months and is encouraged to create work that engages with our community. Some artists have held performances or hosted workshops, whilst others have worked with specific community groups or used the time to develop professionally. We want to find artists who are working to engage our community through radical and inspiring work. We are particularly interested in local artists who are underrepresented in the sector, and artists who have a socially engaged practice.

In Autumn 2025, we will be seeking applications for artists to be in residence with us in 2026. Check back then for info.

Programming your work at SMH:

St Margaret’s House supports emerging artists and practitioners by offering opportunities to deliver activities, performances and events across our non-traditional venues. We are currently accepting programming proposals. Would you like to propose collaborating with us on:

  • Performances and Sharings?

  • Arts Workshops?

  • Wellbeing Sessions?

  • Exhibitions?

  • Community Projects?

Exhibiting your work at SMH:

We have two exhibitions spaces at St Margaret’s House (The Gallery Cafe and The Chapel), perfect for emerging artists and curators to formally exhibit work for the first time.

If you have an idea for an exhibition - even if it is the very beginnings of an idea - fill out the below proposal form and someone from the Exhibitions Team will be in touch.
