Until the emergence of agriculture and eventually urbanization, people primarily foraged their food in the wild for bodily sustenance. Now that most people do not venture into the wild for food, has humanity outgrown foraging? “Urban Foraging” explores foraging as a bioevolutionary behavior that has evolved in parallel to our transition to living in cities to sustain our intellectual and emotional needs.
The Hoxton Collective’s newest exhibition brings together 10 artists from different disciplines to expand the definition of foraging beyond its primal connotations and unravel its shapeshifting nature. The exhibition is unique in its approach, where the curators worked individually with the artists on a two-week-long foraging exercise exploring personal perspectives on sustenance, energy optimization and the wild.
