Frankie Roberts
Our fourth artist, Frankie Roberts was nominated by the wonderful Lindsay Friend from iMT Gallery.
Frankie used her residency time with us to reconnect with her performance practice, having worked in a digital sphere for nearly two years due to the pandemic.
Frankie is an artist whose work primarily spans performance, animation, music and installation. She uses bright colours, vivid projections and harmonious poetry as an exploration in the narrative. Frankie has worked for St Mungo's for the past 8 years, a job she loves and sees as a privilege. Her art practice and job have formed somewhat of a philosophical partnership in that they both involve deep care and interest in people, lives and worlds beyond the mainstream.
“During my AIR I really felt welcomed by the SMH community- being able to chat to people in the create place downstairs was great and there was always something interesting going on”
“The chapel was an amazing space to host the end-of-residency audiovisual smackdown performance night with Plastique Fantastique and Ben Drew, we all felt invigorated being able to perform live and together again. The setting was the perfect combination of intimate, calming and slightly jarring. While setting up the event, George and everyone at SMH couldn't have been more helpful and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of such a warm and generous community. I hope to keep up a relationship with SMH in the future as it's clear the unique and important work you do benefits so many in the community.”
“Throughout the residency I was working towards making work for a live audience again, after making mainly digital/animation work through the pandemic. Knowing I was working towards something to share with a live audience brought a new wave of energy to my process. I used the studio space to rehearse sound a lot, investigate machine-learning animation techniques and writing as well as completing an online course in Touch Designer. I really enjoyed the workshop with Re Theatre and found it helpful when thinking about communicating with your body both on and off stage.”
