Go Softly in the World: In Conversation With....

  • The Gallery Cafe 21 Old Ford Road London, England, E2 9PL United Kingdom (map)

Join us for our next In Conversation With…..event on Thursday 8th February, 6.30pm – 8.30pm when Exhibition Coordinator at St Margaret’s House, Virginia Orr, hosts a discussion with Amanda Hutt, whose work will be on show at The Gallery Café and Beccy Allen, Arts and Wellbeing Director/Deputy CEO at St Margaret’s House.

Amanda Hutt works by hand in soft pastel, a medium that gives such depth and richness of colour. She uses it atypically, choosing to isolate areas with a hard edge which helps to give the pictures a stillness. The title ‘Go Softly in the World’ was chosen by the artist for two reasons: the word ‘softly’ references pastel, Amanda’s medium of choice, but it also chimes with her quiet approach to life, a belief in treating the world with respect and doing what we can quietly. The title comes from a Nigerian proverb: ‘Go softly in the world, if it is harmed, it cannot return’

In the discussion, Amanda will explore her work, her influences, and how art can bring awareness to a wide range of topics. Beccy, who has committed to living sustainably over the last five years, will talk about the differences between soft and hard power in environmental issues, how to combat overwhelm, and how small actions can help us all ‘go more softly in the world’.

We will continue the evening with an invitation to view the exhibition whilst enjoying a special performance by Amani Albrair on guitar.
