EVENT: Regency Duo

  • The Gallery Cafe 21 Old Ford Road London, England, E2 9PL United Kingdom (map)

Join Regency Duo to celebrate the spring equinox with a varied programme of music for violin and guitar.

The lively tangos of Piazzolla sit alongside the musical reflections of Effy Efthymiou and Stephen Goss. A new work by Declan Molloy infuses the poetry of Jemma Borg in a musical contemplation of sound and silence. The perfect way to see in the new season for musical enthusiasts of all kinds.

The evening’s programme is as follows:

Astor Piazzolla (1921–92) Café 1930 (7’)

Effy Efthymiou (1980) Swarming (6’)

Ferdinand Rebay (1880–1953) Variations on Schubert’s ‘Heidenröslein’ (7’)

Tōru Takemitsu (1930–96) Equinox (6’)

Gareth Farr (1968) Wakatipu (5’)

Declan Molloy (2000–) Thoughts on Sound and Silence (10’)

Astor Piazzolla Nightclub 1960 (7’)

It begins with 'Café 1930' from Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango, which obviously fits the venue well! The Efthymiou, Rebay and Molloy all centre on nature and wildlife, which we thought were fitting tributes to spring. Takemitsu's Equinox for solo guitar is the perfect piece for this programme (for obvious reasons!), and the Farr draws on mythological pretexts which chime nicely with the equinox theme. The lively 'Nightclub 1960' from Histoire du Tango finishes it all off, with a nod to what the rest of the evening may hold...

Regency Duo is a versatile ensemble comprising violinist Eliza Nagle and guitarist Declan Hickey. Their repertoire stretches from the rarely heard duets of Revolutionary France to brand new commissions, coupled with their own arrangements of works by Schubert, Fauré and Django Reinhardt. Current programmes include works by Declan Molloy, Effy Efthymiou, Stephen Goss and Poul Ruders, many of whom have worked closely with the duo. They are currently Young Artists of the International Guitar Foundation.
