St Margaret’s House is delighted to host and support the first sharing of a performance by the Waling Waling Drama Group, the Invisible Hands, for International Migrants Day.
Waling Waling Drama Group
Members of Waling Waling, a migrant domestic workers group, have been meeting for the last three months as part of a brand-new drama project.
Together, they've made a piece of theatre to celebrate International Migrants Day. This is the very first version of the show, and they are looking for feedback and support to take the show forward.
Performers are former and current domestic workers based in the UK. This performance has been developed exploring their lived experiences, in order to support their campaign to ensure rights for all migrants in the UK.
The 'invisible hand' is a metaphor used by Adam Smith, the 18th century liberal economist whose arguments paved the way for modern capitalism. He believed that the free market is guided by self-interest and competition. The invisible hand metaphor describes the unseen forces that move a free market economy, which renders many kinds of labour invisible and distinguishes what is valuable, and what is not.
This performance is a play on Smith's metaphor. They will make visible what capitalism has made invisible: the hands that care, the hands that clean, the hands that maintain the people and things we need. Their performance asks why that is, but also shows and celebrates alternatives: solidarity, care, and demanding justice from power.
